If you have read this book “Thinking, Fast and Slow,” you must be familiar with two systems ( System 1 & System 2), which we use to make a decision.
System 1, when we generally don’t go deeper into the problem and come up with solutions due to familiarity with the problem.
Like, If I ask you, what is 2+2? To answer this question, you don’t need to seat and solve this problem. You just saw the question, and you will find that you already know the answer.
But what if I ask you, what is 2458 * 3546? Now, you know that you can find the answer, but you will have to seat and solve it.
Here, our system 2 comes into play, where we go deeper into the problem to solve it, to get more insight about the problem.
And the book “Thinking, Fast and Slow” tries to explain the same.
While reading, a thought crosses my mind!.
Which system do I apply while reading?.
This is an essential question because reading is not absolute, like happening in any sort of vacuum, but instead, it is the process that occurs continuously.
It’s a constant process of thinking and reaction to what is being read.
When I observed, I realized, it’s not like I am just reading. But, instead, there is a continuous response to the ideas. The constant intervention from the mind is happening.
Like, while reading, I can observe that there is sometimes the process of recognizing the fact I am reading, or the process fo denying the ideas if it does not suit my understanding, or agreeing with given ideas, so I observed I am continuously reacting to what I am reading.
And it’s not intentional; I don’t do it on purpose; rather it is a natural process that happens while reading.
To understand this question, I asked one more question to myself that is, how much do I remember from the book, or how much insight I have got by reading this book.
After thinking about it, I realised very little actually!
That doesn’t mean I was not attentive when I was reading! But I didn’t consider reading a serious thing! That I should get deep into every idea, that what the author was trying to convey. Questions like, the idea author propagating is really in accordance with the truth or just it’s his passing comments.
No surprise to guess, that this all is a part of system 2 of mind! It’s doesn’t come under the preview of System 1.
And my whole approach towards reading is like, reading spontaneously, like, If I am learning something I think about the idea, react to it, analysis the idea but all this happened spontaneously. Sometimes I even had great insight! But as it is just a result of my system 1, I simply don’t care to remember it afterwards.
So, what happened in the end. When I complete the book, I forgot all those great moments and insights which I come across while reading the book. I even forgot all the important things which are covered in the book.
All I remember is a very vague understanding of the book. Like, what this book is all about, and that’s it.
That’s the time I realised why it important to utilized system 2, which analyse things objectively.
And that was the time I decided; I will no longer just read the book. Instead, I will treat it as a quest to find out the answers and then, check and cross-check all the concepts existing in the book.
And I also, think this can be implemented in fiction books too because many fiction writers touch profound subjects the only difference is they do it in the storytelling format.
So how you can do your system 2 work while reading the book?. What I do is, I have dedicated notebook for the book am reading. So I keep on taking notes, writing doubt about the opinion which exist in the book and write an everything I feel at the time of reading a book.
So, when I end the book, I know I have all the essential things written with me, the ideas which I don’t subscribe to or ideas which I find interesting.
This way, I can make the most out of reading!
